7. Duke Nukem - Duke Nukem Series

Duke’s claim to fame is that he always has something to say about whatever he’s doing. He’s all about “kickin’ ass, and takin’ names” and performing other quotes of the like. He’s like a mix between Ash from Evil Dead, Roddy Piper from They Live, and ol’ Jack Burton from Big Trouble in Little China. He fights mutated cops that look like giant pigmen, and he battles aliens for the sake of the human race. Weapons range from Duke’s “Mighty Foot” to a rapid action rocket launcher lovingly referred to as: The Devastator.

6. BJ Blazkowicz - Wolfenstein

This was the game that let you run amok, and blast Nazi’s in the face. As BJ Blazkowicz, you take on the Nazi regime, which involves killing regular asshole Nazis, and mutant asshole Nazis. One of the finer touches of the Wofenstein game was the replay called the “Deathcam”. After taking out the boss at the end of the level, his demise was shown again, often to the delight of the player.

5. Gordan Freeman – Half-Life

Gordan Freeman, a theoretical physicist, is caught up in a bad day when a rift is opened up to another dimension and he is all by his lonesome to try and stay alive. The cool thing about Freeman is that he generally has to use his wits to stay alive and is always a heavy underdog. He’s a scientist, not an elite killing machine who takes great pleasure in splattering an alien’s head before dropping a sweet one-liner. Gordan Freeman is cool, but imagine if the game was played as just straight up Morgan Freeman? Not even as a character. Just straight up Morgan Freeman.

4. The Fireseed Family – Turok

Turok is a time-travelling, dinosaur hunting Native-American given the task of protecting the realm between Earth and the Lost Land. Using old technology, like a compound bow, and newer-age techs like pulse rifles, Turok kills his way to the chronoscepter, a gadget that can break the barriers down and allow bad guys, like The Campaigner to take over the universe! Some nice touches to the Turok world are the arrows that stay in whatever they are shot into, and the cerebral bore, a flying globe that burrows into the skull to destroy the precious brain within.
